Legalisation

Legalisation is the process by which the signature and seal of the notary are authenticated by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO Apostille) for non Commonwealth Countries under the terms of the Hague Convention.

If required, we can also obtain Consular legalisation from foreign embassies in London.

What are the fees for Notarising documents?

This is dependent on the service you require, the type and number of documents concerned and which country they are to go to. Please feel free to call us in advance to establish the likely cost.

In any of our three offices in Edinburgh, Bonnyrigg or Penicuik.

Do I need an appointment?

To ensure that there is someone available to notarise your documents its best to call us to arrange an appointment. However please feel free to pop into one of our offices on the off chance that someone is available – if no one is free you can arrange an appointment at that time.

Do you need to see the documents first?

Not usually.

What should I bring with me?

Your passport or other form of photographic ID together with the documentation you require to be notarised.

What is the Apostille Certificate?

The Apostille is the authentication of a document for use in another country. Under the Hague Apostille treaty member countries agreed to recognise the Apostille from other member countries.

Other than Commonwealth Countries and the USA, a document require to be used abroad has to be notarised and apostilled by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Milton Keynes.  The Apostille recognises the document has been notarised by a registered Notary in the UK.
